Propylene Glycol (pg) is a man-made chemical derived from petroleum. However, propylene glycol is safe for use in humans. The FDA has categorized propylene glycol as “Generally Recognized as Safe”. GRAS.
Propylene glycol is non-toxic even if it is ingested in reasonably large amounts. The elimination of pg from the body takes about 4 hours if it is ingested. More importantly there is no bio accumulation (build up in the body over time) with propylene glycol. Both experimental and anecdotal evidence indicates pg to be completely non-carcinogenic. Propylene glycol was used for many years in vapor treatments for asthmatics with no negative side effects. pg is used in toothpaste, food additives, time-released capsules and many other uses for human consumption.
Vegetable Glycerine (vg) is a clear, odorless liquid produced from palm oil, soy oil, or coconut oil. It has many valuable uses. It is used in cosmetic products, foods, toothpaste, as a sweetener, and in e liquid. Vegetable Glycerine is usually mixed with propylene glycol to increase the visual smoke effect of vapor and to smooth out the throat hit (feeling received when vaping an e-cigarette).
At Eliquid Market we have tested 100% pg e liquid and 100% vg e liquid. We found that 100% pg gives a stronger throat hit but little visual effect from the vapor. A 100% vg has no throat hit and doesn’t feel like smoking. Furthermore, vg is too thick by itself and has a tendency to clog up atomizers, clearomizers, and cartomizers very quickly. Eliquid Market.com uses an 80% pg/20% vg blend in all our e liquids. We have found that this is the best blend to produce a satisfying throat hit (feeling of smoking in the throat) and still provide a lot of visual smoke effect when the vapor is exhaled. Because currently we only carry Dekang e liquid we are confident that all of our e liquid will have the exact 80/20 pg/vg blend in each one of our liquids, and the flavor and nicotine levels will always be consistent.
